More COVID Patients Seeing Hair Loss

We’ve previously told you about people wondering about increased hair loss after having COVID. Unfortunately, this continues to be a trend and appears to be happening to more and more people. So you are not alone.

One study says “patients with a history of COVID were nearly four times as likely to develop hair loss than those who weren’t infected”. Another estimates that “22% of patients who were hospitalized with COVID experienced hair loss after their illness”. 1

Should You Worry?

While these numbers may appear alarming, they may not be so dire because there is still no known evidence directly linking the virus to hair loss. Instead, it appears to be more of a stress response and an interruption in our body’s natural cycles of hair growth. Simply put, we normally shed a healthy amount of hair every day, then there is a brief resting phase, and then new hair comes back where the old hair was. This is normal and it happens all time whether we realize it or not. In fact, when everything is functioning normally, we do not notice it at all. We only tend to notice when extra amounts of hair fall out or when the hair grows back slowly or doesn’t grow back at all. So what is suspected to be happening to an increasing number of people after experiencing COVID is this natural cycle gets interrupted. This leads us to see what appears to us to be hair loss, but in reality, it’s more likely hair that hasn’t grown back yet.

Hopefully. There are also many other reasons why you can actually lose hair that may not ever grow back on its own without some type of help. So when should you worry that your hair loss is not normal or that it’s taking too long to come back after COVID? You shouldn’t wait too long because the sooner you detect a problem, the greater the success rate in stopping it from getting worse. And you may be able to get it to grow back.

It Can Happen to Anyone

One of the many people who has experienced hair loss after COVID has been ABC TV’s Doctor Jennifer Ashton, who detailed her struggles on TV and on her social media in 2022. She talks about “Shock Hair Loss” here, along with more details.

covid hair loss treatment options include minoxidil

Among the potential treatment options Dr. Ashton suggests is Minoxidil. HairStart® Advanced Growth™ is a high-performance growth stimulator you can use. It combines Minoxidil with Saw Palmetto Extract. This DHT opposing ingredient enhances the performance of the hair regrowth cycle.
