Many people have wondered about hair loss after having the virus or after getting vaccinated against the virus.
There is no evidence that the virus can directly cause hair loss. However, since temporary hair loss or shedding called telogen effluvium, is normal after a fever or illness, it may seem as if we are losing our hair. Even without a fever, the physical and/or emotional stress can cause temporary shedding. “Temporary” is the word we are supposed to keep in mind. But it is very difficult to think like that when we are seeing more hair on our pillows or in the shower drain or in our hairbrushes and combs. There is also no known evidence that the COVID-19 vaccinations can lead to hair loss. According to the CDC as of September 2021, “Serious side effects that could cause a long-term health problem are extremely unlikely following any vaccination”. But that doesn’t mean we won’t stress out over it.
