New Study about Hair Loss and Prostate Drug being linked to Erectile Dysfunction in Men
Prescription drugs finasteride and dutasteride (brand names Proscar and Avodart respectively) have long been used for men with prostate problems. Along the way came a happy discovery that a certain dose of finasteride was helping men get hair back so in 1997 it became a bona-fide effective medical treatment for some men with hair loss problems (under the brand name Propecia).
The scientific explanation is that finasteride helps block the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), and DHT is a bad thing for men’s hair. There are other known pros and cons to all of this and as always with any medication for any reason, the benefits and risks need to be discussed between patients and their doctors. It has already been known that some of the possible adverse effects of finasteride have included a loss of libido and erectile problems but for some men dealing with hair-loss, by comparison, those were acceptable possible side-effects.
But now a brand new study is reporting that men with longer exposures to these drugs had a higher risk of persistent erectile dysfunction than men with less exposure to them, and the problem continued even after they stopped taking the drugs. Until now there wasn’t evidence that the drugs would cause long-term problems for men taking them for a long period of time.
