Easy Hair Care Resolutions You Can Actually Keep This Year

How are those New Year’s resolutions coming along? At a little over two months into the new year, many of us are struggling with maintaining resolutions. Life can be hectic, and some resolutions are easier to keep than others. Especially this year. Don’t worry though! We have some easy-to-follow resolutions for your hair so you can be more confident in showing off your beautiful, thick, healthy hair all year long!

Get Regular Trims
Regularly trimming your hair is important for maintaining strong healthy hair. Leaving dead ends for too long can cause hair to get easily tangled and cause breakage. Depending on your desired style and hair type, getting a trim every 6-12 weeks is recommended. Pro tip: If you are not already a client at New England Associates® (it is easy to become a client at NEA by simply calling 781-246-8202 for the Boston area or 603-669-2224 for Manchester, NH), make sure you go to a licensed stylist to cut or trim your hair! The stylist can tell you about how often you should be getting a trim and recommend the best length to be cut. Your spouse or your BFF does not count. There are enough videos of failed DIY hair cuts to know how that will turn out.

Drink More Water
Getting enough moisture to your strands from the outside is just as important as getting it internally. Water makes up almost 25% of the weight of a single strand of hair. Drinking at least 8 cups of water a day will help to strengthen your hair and increase growth. Plus, it’s great for your skin too! If you have trouble remembering to drink enough water set a few daily timers or reminders on your phone. There are also plenty of apps and inexpensive gadgets at the dollar stores to keep you mindful of your water consumption.

Use Less Heat
If you straighten or blow-dry your hair daily, you could be raising your chances of premature hair loss. Too much heat damages your hair causing it to become weak, brittle, and prone to breakage. Instead of heat styling, let your hair air-dry and explore some easy up-dos or fun braid styles you can wear. Remember not to go outside with wet hair in freezing temperatures! If you’re in a rush and don’t have time to air-dry your hair skip wetting your hair altogether and use dry shampoo instead. If you must heat style, make sure to always apply a heat protectant product and use the lowest heat setting needed.

Follow Proper Wash Technique
There is a proper way to wash your hair to reduce damage and slow hair loss. When washing, make sure you focus on cleaning the scalp as much as your actual strands. Too much sebum build-up on the scalp clogs hair follicles which can lead to hair loss. Starting with the scalp, using the pads of your fingers gently scrub your scalp and work your way down to the ends. When conditioning, focus on the ends of your hair first then work your way up towards the scalp. Use warm water for shampoo and cool water to rinse out conditioner. Using water that’s too hot, dries out your hair and lowers your hair’s elasticity leaving it more prone to split ends and breakage. You should use sulfate-free and paraben-free shampoo and conditioner. These chemicals have been found to be among the key culprits of hair loss and thinning hair and destroy hair follicles.
